The Sandwich Historical Society and its Glass Museum preserves and displays the famous glass manufactured in Sandwich during the 1800s. Sandwich was the site of one of America’s largest early glass factories, the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company. The site opened in 1825 and closed in 1888, and their wares, now known as “Sandwich Glass”, have become prized by collectors worldwide. Our permanent collection showcases the finest examples of Sandwich Glass from the entire period of factory production. Offering live glassblowing demonstrations hourly on the hour, an informative movie, extensive galleries of both historic and contemporary glass, a kid-friendly experiential play space, and a breathtakingly beautiful Gift Shop, the Museum affords visitors of all ages a fascinating glimpse into the art, history, and science of glass making.
And if you’re a Plymouth area resident, you should know that the Sandwich Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of maintaining an extensive archive of historical artifacts and mounting historical exhibitions in our Sandwich Glass Museum. We have a comprehensive docent training program. Whether you’re interested in the items themselves or the stories of the folk who used them, we’d love to welcome you to the SHS family!
