February 23, 2023

For a place that gets most of its tourists in the summer, the South Shore of Massachusetts is absolutely booming during the Spring season! With St. Patty’s Day celebrations, bar crawls and community get-togethers, make sure to catch these events on the South Shore this Spring!

Irish Heritage Trail

Starting in Weymouth, and continuing through Hingham, Hull, Cohasset, Scituate, Marshfield and Kingston before ending in Plymouth, the South Shore Irish Heritage Trail is a beautiful trip to take through the area and through history.

The Irish community is one of many that helped build our nation into what it is today, especially in this specific part of Massachusetts. Some came over in the 1600s, but the greatest influx was in the mid-1800s. This was the time of the Great Famine, so thousands of Irish immigrants escaped their homeland to travel to America. They were promised an end to the famine and disease, and began new lives in America, primarily on the South Shore.

As you travel between the eight towns the immigrants primarily settled in, you will discover a plethora of artifacts and structures that tell the story of their early living here. What lured most of them to the South Coast were the job opportunities that would help them feed and grow their families and have the ability to make and save money.

You will discover old factory and mill structures, homes and more as you make the trek down the South Shore Irish Heritage Trail.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Scituate, MA is a spirited, annual celebration that brings together the entire community and paints the town in shades of green. The beloved parade honors Irish heritage and traditions, featuring floats, marching bands, bagpipes, Irish dancers, and enthusiastic participants donned in green attire.

In addition to the parade, other events such as the Mad Hatter’s Ball and Annual Mayor’s Race occur on the same day! The crowd favorite is usually the St. Pat’s Plunge into the ocean at Peggotty Beach.

With Scituate boasting one of the highest percentages of residents of Irish descent in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day holds a special place in the town’s heart. This celebration is a local favorite, where residents and visitors gather to celebrate their heritage and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

St. Pat’s Day 5K

The St. Pat’s Day 5K in Plymouth, MA, is a lively tribute to the Irish community and their descendants who have contributed to the area’s rich heritage. This annual event is not just about running; it’s a celebration of culture and camaraderie. Participants are invited to proudly wear green attire, embracing the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.

After crossing the finish line, the festivities continue at Mayflower Brewery, where each participant over 21 receives a complimentary beer! The entire event is a meaningful way for the community to come together, honor their roots, and pay homage to those who came before them while enjoying the spirited essence of St. Patty’s Day.
