Incorporated as a town in 1888, Norwell is situated on 21.17 square miles only 20 miles south of Boston. Settlers came to Norwell because of its agricultural land and waterpower. Over 40 years ago Norwell experienced a major building boom that nearly doubled its population. Today lively bars and top notch restaurants abound and visitors can enjoy the arts by taking in a show at The Company Theater or checking out the gallery at The James Library and Center for the Arts.

Shipbuilding was a major industry in the 18th through the early 19th centuries in Norwell. Some of the finest frigates, schooners, whalers, and merchant vessels were produced in Norwell and further down the river in North Marshfield and Pembroke.
