Whether you enjoy the soft glow of fall foliage or the crimson color of a fresh cranberry harvest, the South Shore has something for everyone to enjoy each autumn. Take a ride down the coast of Massachusetts to explore the cranberry harvest season or experience the fun of a Renaissance fair at King Richard’s Faire in Carver.

Cranberry Harvest Season

Fall on the South Shore is known as cranberry bog season, when fresh cranberries are ready for harvesting from one of the bogs along the coast. In fact, southeastern Massachusetts is home to over 900 cranberry bogs, covering approximately 14,000 acres, according to the North and South Rivers Watershed Association.

Cranberry bogs are defining features across the South Shore. The native people of Massachusetts harvested wild cranberries for hundreds of years as a fruit, a preservative and a color dye for clothing. When Europeans settled in the New England region, they cultivated the red berries as a food supply, finding that the wetlands of the southeast were ideal for growing the fruit. Today, cranberries are the number one crop in Massachusetts and are recognized as a superfood.
