Things to Do this September in Plymouth County

Blogs

August 20, 2023

September is an amazing month in New England. The air starts catching a bit of autumn’s chill but is still warm enough to plan adventures with friends and family. This is why September is a fantastic time of year to visit Plymouth County to see special events and annual harvests.

Go to the Renaissance Festival

King Richard’s Faire in Carver, MA has been the must-see New England Renaissance Festival since 1982 and is still going strong. Running annually from September through mid-October, it’s a mix of fantasy and history that creates an atmosphere of entertainment and fun.

Being the largest Renaissance Festival in New England means that there’s so much to see and do. Dine on roasted turkey legs and sip on ale and sparkling wine as you watch jousting, animal shows, and medieval weapons demonstrations. You can try your hand at archery and knife-throwing, ride in a pirate ship, and interact with the colorful characters of King Richard’s court. There are even special themed weekends and events, so keep an eye on the calendar!

Sunday Drive to See Classic Cars

We’ve all heard of the “Sunday dive,” but classic car nuts can start theirs off in a special way with Rebels & Rods. This car club meets in Plymouth, MA every Sunday from 7am to 10am (weather permitting) from April-November. Hot Rods, Mustangs, Corvettes, and more will proudly be on display. These meet-ups support first responders, veterans and citizens in need, and their events are always family- and pet-friendly.

While the meet-up isn’t exclusive to September, it’s a fantastic time to go as the weather is more agreeable. That, and with kids going back to school and vacation times once again limited, it’s a great way to spend time together as a family. Plan to hit the car show, then take the kids out for brunch. Start your Sunday by viewing classic cars with the family. You’ll be helping charities, making precious family memories, and get to see cool, classic cars at once!

See Cranberries Harvested

In Massachusetts, cranberries turn red around mid-August and are harvested in October. This means September is the perfect time to take a tour of a real cranberry bog and learn about New England’s native fruit. This way you can see the cranberries at their most vibrant. Tours also become more limited during the harvest itself to let the farmers do their work.

Massachusetts Cranberries in Plymouth, MA offers cranberry bog tours April through November, but the berries are best to check out in September, before they’re picked. Weekdays tours are 60-90 minutes long and include not only an up-close and personal visit to a cranberry bog, but an educational rundown of the history of the cranberry and the cranberry industry.

Don’t think that once the summer ends that fun has to stop. Plymouth County has plenty of things to do before fall is in full swing. Plan a weekend outing this September, either for yourself or the family, and make the most of your free time.
